Characteristics of the network
Corpus Linguistics (CL) might be the most widespread analytical method nowadays. Developments in IT make it possible to explore large groups of texts made up of hundreds or even thousands of forms. This places Linguistics in an unprecedented position. The growing number of online documents requires the development of analytical techniques aimed at processing such a large amount of information. Text corpora have thus become an essential tool for the study of languages, as well as a useful resource used to test hypotheses about language evolution, learning and use, among others.
The current possibilities to access and process large texts have encouraged several research groups which devote some of their time to building corpora to form this network, in accordance to the trends followed by the international research community.
The so called Red Corpus, funded by the Consellería de Educación (Galician Education Office) (Ref. 2009/047, DOG No. 143, 23rd July 2009) comprises nine research groups which belong to the three universities that exist in Galicia. These groups deal with Corpus Linguistics from various perspectives -- namely synchronic, diachronic and variation-oriented, among others -- and work with both written and oral texts. They pursue different objectives -- reference corpora, learning corpora, and so on -- both with modern languages such as English, Spanish and Galician, and also with dead languages such as Latin or Greek, on the one hand, and Hittite, on the other.
The Galician Corpus Linguistics Network has as its main aim the creation of a working structure which will allow for the exchange of experiences and achievements regarding both theoretical and practical aspects of Corpus Linguistics. It also aims at creating a macrogroup which can participate in training activities, workshops and symposia.
